Managem

FCA member since July 2022

Managem is an integrated Pan-African mining group founded in Morocco in 1928.  Owning an exploration license portfolio of 46,000 KM2 in highly prospective and underexplored provinces, Managem is exploring and producing attractive commodities, including precious metals, base metals and metals essentials for clean energy production such as cobalt and copper.

Since its creation, the group has grown thanks to the development of large-scale deposits through a targeted exploration policy and proven expertise in engineering, exploitation and processing. To meet the growing needs of players in industry and technology as well as the needs of the global economy in strategic raw materials, Managem is committed to a growth strategy in Africa and a policy to strengthen its investments in high-potential projects on the continent.

Managem is one of the world’s well-known producers of Cobalt Metal. The Cobalt activity started in 1930 with its subsidiary CTT, which produced Cobalt concentrate from the Bou-Azzer mine, one of the world’s only primary Cobalt mines. Managem’s cobalt cathode is marketed under the CMBA brand, patented and recognised internationally for its quality and highest sustainability standards, in compliance with environmental standards and respect for human rights.

As a major player in the cobalt sector, Managem – through its subsidiary Manatrade – is a member of the Cobalt Committee on the London Metal Exchange (LME) and the Cobalt Development Institute (CDI). In 2019, the responsible production of cobalt by Managem Group was certified according to the standards of the Responsible Minerals Initiative (RMI) and by evaluations by NQC and ECOVADIS.

Managem Group has, in the last few years, secured supply and tolling agreements with reputable actors across the supply chain, such as Glencore, Renault Group and the BMW group. These agreements aim to secure low-carbon cobalt sulphate produced in Morocco, guaranteeing the traceability of the electric battery supply chain from their operations while reducing the negative impact on the environment. This is thanks to the know-how of Managem Group, whose facilities’ energy efficiency is reflected in the optimisation of consumption and the increasing use of green energies, more than 80% of which come from wind power.

The group recently joined the FCA to enable their investment in on-the-ground projects that aim to support and facilitate the transformation of artisanal mining communities in the DRC, indicating the group’s commitment to sustainable change through collective action.

“Managem applies very high standards on ESG and CSR subjects. The group’s CCT cobalt plant and mine sites operate at the highest standards. The company would like to share its expertise in cobalt mining activity in DRC and contribute to improving the operating conditions of artisanal mining in DRC. Besides Morocco, the company is keen on promoting responsible global mining operations and contributing positively to the cobalt supply chain.”
